You’d have to go to the Department of Fish and Game (if I recall correctly) and get a license to go out and capture one. From everything I’ve read and been told, it is currently illegal in the state of California to sell Alligator Lizards.

Celexia is correct. It is illegal to ask for or receive a fee for a native species that is not on the list of legal species to commercially propagate. The alligator lizard is not on that list.

Also, alligator lizards are not social lizards, they gain nothing from living together. Your more likely to stress them out and cause competition for food rather than make them happy.

Breeding is also a poor idea, especially since you are so new to the species. You would need a propagation license($50) and all babies would have to be re homed by the time they are 45 days old. From what I understand you must be over 18 and have proof of some type of facility and knowledge before they will issue a propagation license to someone wishing to propagate a species thats not on the legal list.

If you intend to collect a female to breed, you will need an up to date California Sports Fishing license($40) on top of the propagation license. You must be 16 years or older to get this license.

On top of all these fees for licensing you will need tanks, food, water, lighting, housing, and an incubator. Thats most likely going to run you a couple hundred dollars.

Its a lot of work, and I recommend you don’t try it until you have been around and owned this species for a few years. After you know enough about them and you are experienced with their care, and California’s DFG allows it, you should try breeding.

Well don’t just stop your hobby, pursue it! Just read up before you get into anything, and make sure it’s legal.

Herping is a great hobby, just make sure you have the proper permits to touch native reptiles and be sure to look up the rules on catching them.
