It takes a LONG time to tame an alligator lizard. If you do it incorrectly, you are bound to get no results. I’ve found that handling my alligator lizard rarely, maybe once every 2 weeks has produced amazing results after 4-5 months. He is still nervous for the first minute, but then completely calms down as long as no one touches his head or tail.

Don’t forcefully hold the lizard down. Allow him to crawl around on you when comfortable. Once he gets used you your scent and presence, you should be able to pick him up and move him around much easier.

Of course, have patience.

I wouldn’t call them scary or violent. I feel its the other way around. How would you like a 5+ foot creature chasing you down and trying to hold you? lol.

Handle him rarely and use slow motions. You won’t see any significant improvements for a few months.
When he runs and you absolutely need him out of the tank to clean it, scoop him up with your hand.

What is your set-up like: temps, lighting, hides, substrate? Does your calcium powder have vitamin D3 and no phosphorus?

You should also refrain from handling Sharky until he/she starts eating again. Handling, for a lizard not accustomed to it, is extremely stressful. Take things slowly and make sure your lizard is well settled in(feeding and healthy) before you start regular handling.

I find a good first step is hand feeding. Once you get Sharky eating start offering the crickets on forceps instead of dropping them in. Then start offering them from your hand. This helps them to start to associate you and your hands with good things like food and it will help them to overcome their fear as they get used to reaching in their cage. Then slowly start slowly handling following Sushi’s advice. If you notice signs of stress, like not eating, decrease or stop handling for awhile.
