HEllo there! I have recently been researching agamas, and the more I research the more I love em! I was wondering if anyone had some good care sheets, some good beginner species of agama, and some enclosure pics! Thanks for any help!

I am really liking the size of the japalura splendida species, I live a ways away from my petstore so crickets are hard to come by, which is why small lizards appeal to me. I planning on getting two females and housing in a 30 gallon or so, and plan on feeding phoenix worms as a staple. The only thing is, can they be handled easily? I know other species of agama like being handled, and I am wondering if these are the same way?

I have never owned japalura splendida myself but I have heard that they can be picky or they can be easy.Sometimes her’s likes to be handled and sometimes it just wants to be left alone. If you’re going to get two of them I would recommend a 40+ gal tank.

Unfortunately I know longer own an agama.I had a pyramid agama for about a month before my mom sold it.
He was pretty easy to care for.He lived in a desert/rocky setup and was happy in a ten gallon.I used sand since he liked to burrow and he had rock caves as hides. The warm side was kept at around 88-90F and the cool side was kept between 75-80F.At night the tank was kept at an ambient temperature of around 70.He ate about 8-10 crickets a day which were dusted with calcium 3 times a week.I used reptiglo 10.0 as his UV lamp also.
Good luck with your future agama.

Yes, they can be kept on sand but I wouldn’t recommend it if they’re young. There is always the risk of impaction but it’s less likely if yours is an adult.I didn’t keep mine on sand for more than a week before switching to repticarpet.I also fed him in a separate container so that he didn’t ingest any sand as well, so if you take all the necessary precautions it should be fine.

Heres what I got so far

10 gallon tank for when he is young- paper towel substrate, sticks rocks etc. what watt basking lamp should I use? with a UVB light, hides on cool and warm side.

30 gallon tank when he is big enough-might consider putting on sand, and do the seperate feeding area idea, with basically the same setup.

Pyramid agama

The tanks sound good. For a ten gallon, I’d probably use a 75 watt house bulb since 10 gallons aren’t that good at regulating heat.As for the sticks, agamas don’t usually climb since they burrow but I guess every agama could be different.Keep a semi large water bowl in there in case he/she gets too hot so that it can soak itself if desired.
For the 30 gallon, I’d use a 100 watt bulb a couple inches above the tank. But other than that it sounds really good! Good luck with the little guy/girl and don’t forget pics!
