Snake or Legless Lizard? - Beach/In the Water at Hilton Head

HI All,

New here and I am looking for some help. My wife and nieces encountered a beige and pink colored reptile on the beach at Hilton Head Island. It was legless, about 2 feet long and tried to bury itself in the sand and after some kids kept pulling it out of the sand it spun around and swam back into the ocean. A Glass Lizard perhaps? I don’t know how to upload a picture, or I would.

It is probably not a glass lizard, as they are green, black, and bronze in color and don’t seem to like water. A water snake seems right for the size, but I’m not sure about coloration... Do you know any more about its appearance? Thickness, head shape, presence/absence of eyelids, and pattern would all help.
