 Breeding

I’ve never breeded a snake before but I did with CWDs successfully....if I was to breed my boa or albino burm how would I take the eggs away without getting bit? I’m not breeding these two snakes together or do you guys think I should breed something smaller like a bp or kingsnake since its my first time?

That’s easy! Have a friend take them away. :-)

OK, kidding.

I’m afraid I can’t help much, as rainbows are livebearers, but I’ll be interested to see what others say....

with my ball pythons I will admit at first they intimidated me a bit, one hisses up a storm but I always get to them right after they lay and the girls are pretty wiped out, so no bites yet. i just go in there and grab what i can and usually they tuck their heads, they are such chickens! once you got a hold of them its just unwrapping the coil. with the bps even if a female grabbed me they wont do too much damage, different story with a burm. if you ever do it id imagine a second person would be mandatory. if you missed them laying and they are full of pep ive seen videos of people using anything from a towel over the head to a trash can lid shield.

cliff, are the moms protective of the babies at all or is it just business as usual once the lay? (and is it lay with livebearers?)

If you do burms you will have a more difficult time. Watch the videos on you tube of Jay brewer the owner of Prehistoric pets and creator of some of the finest reticulated pythons in the world.

It a matter of distraction and stealth and nerves of steel. You can also e mail Jay or like his facebook and ask questions.

Xkabx, yes, rainbows are livebearers. Makes it a bit easier, as some of the babies will come to you. ;-) LGR Moms are not overly protective, but then again they’ve been handled regularly all their lives, so it may not hold as a general rule.
