 Burm life expectancy

how long can burmese pythons live for in captivity? I had my albino when I was 6 years old(best birthday gift I ever got) and now I’m 18...so he’s 13 years old.

A lot depends on how often and how much they are fed. A more conservative calorie load equals a much longer life. Over 20 years I bet.

He would eat 1-2 extra large rabbits every two weeks and sometimes birds...he refuse to eat rats he stopped showing interest when he was 9-10’.

Wow you must have been a brave 6 year old. I didn’t start getting into reptiles until just a few years ago.

When I was little I use to watch animal planet and I saw a burmese python and I told my dad and the next day he got me a albino hatchling with a cage and accessories to decorate it...it was the best day of my life :) we actually grew up together lol..he taught me about responsibilty and he’s the reason why I’m into reptiles...but I’m older than him.

I’d have to defer to a burm specialist to pass judgment...but once my snakes are adults, I feed every third week.

Your snake is 18 years old now?? you know when to feed it ...

My retic will definitely let me know when he is hungry. There are no rules ...every individual snake is different.

Lol I’m 18 and he’s 13...thanks for the info but I use to feed him large/jumbo rats but he stopped showing intrest so I started on large rabbits and birds so I changed the feeding schedule to every two weeks since the prey item is large plus I want to give him time to digest it and not get overweight.

So long as he’s not showing "rolls" (fat) you are doing fine. But you can always try going to a two week-three week alternating schedule and see how he adapts.

I have 1 question
Has your burm ever refused a meal? besides the rats which he lost interest in....

My retic goes off food every year right about now...until 6 months later. Sometimes he goes as late as Oct...to April but he has not taken any food since mid Aug this year...so I expect his appetite to be strong come mid Jan.

During the feeding season he will take 5- 6lb rabbits he is 10 feet and slender in comparison to a Burm

Yea when he was 10’ he only stop feeding for a month because he wasn’t use to the rabbits and birds so it too him a while to get used to it plus he hate frozen/thawed so it has to be pre killed...he’s the only picky one :( but I’m not sure if it was the unusual prey or he didn’t wanna eat..he’s healthy and was never sick before and he get monthly vet checks to monitor things like weight and other things.

 Burm life expectancy

I recently ( Sept 3rd or 4th ) took my female red tail in for a check up...just because I could and it is something I do every 2 years. She weighed in at 15.8 kilograms... if I do the math that is 15.8 x 2.2 = lbs I round off to 35 lbs. I knew she was large and even for me she seemed heavy...not obese, just a heavy snake. Quite normal looking and no rolls of fat.

She got a clean bill of health but I was told to feed 1x per month due to the fact that the vet said she is slightly over maintained...hahahaha She went on to tell me that she was treating a very obese anaconda at the local aquarium and the diet has been severely restricted for that snake.

So if you really feed two large rabbits ( I assume large 6 lbs) x 2 = 12 lbs of rabbit every 2 weeks , you may be overfeeding by a considerable amount.

Are there not times in the season where your snake goes off food? Such as my Reticulated python. he is off food now and will not eat anything offered....rabbit or rat. He is like a clock and does this every year from Sept to March give or take a week.
When he does eat it is 1x per 10 days and at 10 feet he dispatches a 5-6 lb rabbit, frozen thawed, easily. He passes the digested meal with in 7 days and is hungry again shortly after that.

But he does not receive more than 1 per feeding unless I only have 2 smaller (2-3 lb) I raise rabbits and that keeps the cost down. I also have access to a few rabbit breeders in town and out of town with very good pricing.

How much do you have to pay for rabbits TAKAHIRO? even at my prices 2 large would be at least 7.00-10.00 each x 4 for a month starts to get expensive.

Does your snake ever get so hungry he strikes at the glass? Or becomes keenly interested at any movement? As you approach or walk by. I can tell when my snake is hungry by these factors ... and the retic is the type of snake that will strike when you open the enclosure unless you let him know there is no food present. I use a paper towel roll to touch his nose first before attempting to reach in bare handed. he is a good boy ... but his feeding response is just amazing.

Hey cphill58, thanks for the helpful info i really appreciate it....I cut his feeding schedule down, and all the workers at petland I know so I kinda get a discount lol so I pay $15 for two rabbits and jumbo rats I believe was $5-6. I can tell he’s hungry because he’ll go in a striking position and hiss(he’s been doing this since he was 4’ which was helpful to me) so I’ll open the cage and he come out to eat...I never feed in his cage and he got used to it. He only goes off of food in November to December and he also get yearly vet check ups. Retics and burms pack a lot of punch when it comes to feeding lol but I wouldn’t get a retic.

I had to change his check ups to yearly instead of monthly like how it was before...the birds costs more because my friend had got them somewhere else and the pet store don’t sell large birds.

He’s 17’...I haven’t taken his weight yet since he’s not with me now. I’m guessing 100 or more idk. I’m being honest with you he’s heavy to pick up but he coils around my body(he never coils around my neck) and it helps with his weight a little but he doesn’t allow touching or handling from strangers and when people observe him I make them keep their distance because he packs a lot of punch. Since he’s hostile towards others nobody is there to help but he’s special I had him as a hatchling and he’s never been sick.

No he’s fine but he’s still at the hospital he won’t be out until next week Sunday because the stitches in his mouth has to heal because the bark was embedded in his mouth. I quickly rushed him to my vet house because it was closed and we went to the hospital the next day but their keeping him to monitor his fluid intake plus stitches removal.....he’s kinda pissed because he’s starting to strike he probably wants to come home. I’ll tell him about your concern lol thanks for worrrying but his alright.

Oh cphill58 do u know were I can get a pure hog island boa because I don’t want it to be crossed with something else because most breeders cross bred them for nice coloration thus making them larger than a regular pure hoggie?? I want a smaller snake this time :(
