Hero dog takes down brown snake
The snake was only centimetres from Barbara when the fearless dog intervened. Barbara said she was working in the yard about mid-afternoon, tying up a tree that had been blown down. “George raced behind me and I heard him make a crazy noise,” she said. “When I turned around he had grabbed the snake and whipped it into the air. “When it landed he was onto it again and whipped it up again and didn’t stop until the snake wasn’t moving.” While emphasising the family doesn’t condone the killing of snakes and regularly re-homes snakes that make their way onto the property, Barbara said George received special treatment after protecting his owner. Eastern browns are the second most venomous snake in the world and potentially highly aggressive. The full story: Link |

Oh, I don’t doubt the dog probably killed the snake which was perhaps close to the lady in question, but this one has a "Lassie the Wonder Dog" quality about it . . . Full disclosure: My folks wouldn’t let me have a dog when I was a kid (I got even by bringing home racers and whiptails), and a couple of years ago I was living in another neighborhood and my neighbor saw Papa Corn on my mantle and asked if I’d had any other snakes . . . I mentioned a nice Sinaloan that had escaped, and he acknowledged he’d found it, but "his dog had killed it." He was a jerk in other areas, so I don’t believe him. I think he did the deed himself . . . Any "true" stories about dogs and snakes? Anyway, here’s some stuff I found on the Eastern Brown, which apparently does have a bit of a pugnacious temperament, but nothing like a black mamba . . . http://www.reptilepark.com.au/animals.asp?catID=16&ID=109 Link Although brown snakes are temperamental and dangerous creatures, they will always try and avoid a confrontation with humans if possible. There is certainly no advantage for the snake in attacking something as large as a person so they will only do this as a last resort. Given the opportunity, even brown snakes will flee rather than attack. I’m just wondering, and there’s no certainty about this one. I have exactly one friend who live is Oz (and studies trees), and I’ve never discussed the subject of snakes with him . . . |
