Experience, access to a vet who will take Hot snakes, Local source of Anti-Venom...?
Even folks with dozens of years of experience get bit. And making it a venomoid is just cruel. Better to leave em wild unless you really know your stuff.

Antivenin for a copperhead? Totally unnecessary.

Most won’t help you unless you can state you are over 18.
You may have to have a license or permit to have one.
And I hate to say it...and really I try NOT to judge but reading your post...
I find it seems to be written by a young person, incorrect spelling and bad sentence structure, as well as incorrect use of caps and non caps.
If you truly want help...finding a copper head. try to write like a grown person.
Just my opinion. AND yes I may know some one who has or raises hots and may have copper heads.

I don’t suppose you would like to self-test your opinion?

It has nothing to do with opinion. Copperhead bites are mild in comparison to most other hots. Many people don’t even go to the hospital, they just wait it off. The bite of a copperhead only causes swelling and moderate to severe pain, it does not cause death or loss of digits/limbs.

Even if you go to the hospital there’s a fair chance they will just give you pain meds and keep you overnight for observation. Many hospitals won’t even administer antivenin.

Maybe you should do a little more research. Only a fool would not seek medical attention for an envenomation. Here’s a recent one for you.

It is aptly titled. B.W. is a well known, experienced keeper.

Yeah, I agree. I never suggested not seeking medical attention for an envenomation. I am simply saying it’s unnecessary to stock your own antivenin for a copperhead bite.

Oh yeah, and screw you. I’ve done plenty of research on copperhead bites. Just because you found one guy who happened to need antivenin doesn’t mean a damn thing.

If you want to just find one story to support your theories then I will do the same. Here, how’s this one taste?

Quote:

Anyway, apparently my snakebite was one of only two that this hospital had ever seen, the other having been a Timber Rattlesnake. I thought it seemed unusual that in an area where Timber Rattlesnakes and Copperheads are so common, the hospital had only treated a couple of bites. I later learned from talking to local people that its not unusual for people in remote areas of Pennsylyvania to stay at home and avoid treating their snakebites. Money may play a key role in this behavior.

Anyway, by the time I had been admitted to the hospital, my pain was to the point where the doctors had me on a Morphine IV through which I could still feel the pain. I learned that the doctors had been online for quite some time researching copperhead bites and how to deal with them. My official doctor came in and explained to me that he would not administer antivenin because the one other time he had tried it, the patient almost died from shock (his exact words.) This was for a Timber Rattlesnake bite. I didn’t mention it at the time because I was overwhelmed with pain, but I would think that they would have at least performed a scratch test to see if I was allergic to the antivenin, but whatever.

By local source, I meant a hospital. Not all of them have it, or have actually dealt with people who’ve gotten envenomed. My point was supposed to be...Keeping hots is not the cool version of getting a stuffed fluffy bunny.

 I’m Also Shaking My Head . . .

Fairy Frog Mother just mentioned a local source for anti-venom, not stocking your own Cro-Fab . . .

And personally, I think that anyone who insists it shouldn’t be used for a copperhead bite ought to volunteer to be a guinea pig on that one . . . Might even win themselves a Darwin Award . . . One idiot doctor--and there are many; ask my sister who teaches at a medical school out west--does not a consensus make . . . There’s the matter of tissue damage from the hemotoxic venom, and that’s not something to be ignored . . .

Fairy Frog Mother,

I was not retorting to your comments. You’ve done nothing to offend me in any way. In my last two posts I was responding to CClark who thinks he knows everything about copperheads. I fully understand what you meant, and I agree, getting a hot snake to be cool is a disaster waiting to happen. And yes, it would probably be good to know if your local hospital stocks antivenin, just in case. But again, and please everyone read this carefully: it’s not completely necessary to have antivenin for a copperhead bite.

Concolor1,

You don’t have to explain to me what Fairy Frog Mother was saying.... why do you guys think I am bitching at Fairy Frog Mother? I’m not. I’m attempting to communicate with CClark about his last statement in this thread.

And when, oh when, did I insist on not getting antivenin for a copperhead bite? Please tell me. Show me where I said it.

I NEVER SAID I WOULD INSIST ON NOT HAVING ANTIVENIN, I AM SIMPLY SAYING IT’S NOT 100% NECESSARY FOR A COPPERHEAD BITE. Please learn to read people. For the love of God.

If I got bit by a copperhead I would want antivenin, but it’s not going to kill me if I don’t get any. There has never been a reported death from the bite of a copperhead.

- Cameron

Maybe there hasn’t been any reports of a death, but my neighbor’s nephew lost 2 fingers from a copper head bite. We have alot of copperhead around here. I don’t mess with them and they don’t mess with me. That’s the way I like it and that’s the way I’m going to keep it.

How About We Let This Thread Die a Deserved Death?

I did a copy-and-paste of that jpeg of "Troll Spray" above, so it was useful . . .

Cameron wants to argue with me claiming he said something he didn’t say . . . I’ll hold off giving him a vocabulary lesson I had in mind, and I won’t hold him to that suggestion he volunteer as a guinea pig for a copperhead bite . . .

I did find a credible reports in the literature of fatalities from copperhead bites . . .

Link

According to information assembled by Karant (in Winger et al. 1980), only a single human death was discovered in his review of 2,000 cases of copperhead bite. . . . Despite these reassuring statistics, Amaral (1927) reported a human death from a copperhead bite involving a 14-year-old bitten on a finger. Likewise, P. Wilson (1908) recorded five deaths from copperhead envenomation, three of which he believed may have been exacerbated the large amount of whiskey consumed by the victims in their misguided attempts at treatment.

Large amounts of whiskey have also been known to cause vitriolic Internet arguments when one or more posters has consumed them and insists on P.U.I.

BTW, I’m a teetotaler and have been for years . . .
