Sexing and Characteristics:
Males-are usually brighter in color, with a dark head, they will have larger pores than the female, males will also get larger in size.
Females-they are thinner in the head and in the tail, they are also smaller in size, there skin has a bit of a tan to it making it darker than the male.
They are very difficult to breed them if you don’t know what your doing, I suggest to do some more research on this specific subject and get a couple of books on it.
This lizard has one of the best personalities and if taken care for properly it could be an ideal pet for anyone
Mostly Active During:
Day
Substrate and Water Needs:
Substrate-I suggest to use regular play sand because Uros love to dig, it is natural looking, and easy to clean.Like all substrate there is a good side and a bad side to it. With sand you have to watch out for how much sand it takes in when eating because it can not digest to much or it will cause impaction.Other substrate you could use is bird seeds, newspaper, and any other clean soil. I do not use newspaper because it prevents it from doing what it was built to do DIG. It also uses it as a safe place to go a night time.
Water-it is not necessary to give your uro some water because it gets all the water it needs from its greens, but if you feel it needs it give it a shallow dish away from the basking lamp
Lighting and UVB:
UVB lighting is critical to your reptiles help it helps with its metabolism of calcium. It also brightens the reptiles skin up to a more brighter color and simulates natural sun light for your reptile UVB light is usually provided with fluorescent bulbs that you buy at an pet store, but to save money buy the light fixture at any hardware store, but REMEMBER take the plastic cover off that is over the light because glass and plastic filters out mostly all of the UVB rays.
Make sure you keep it bright during the day because that’s when your uro is more active.
Temperatures and Humidity:
Temperatures-basking 100-130 degrees F, and ambient temperature should be 80-95 degrees F.In the hiding area could be little bit cooler.Never place a hiding area directly under the basking light. Night should drop into upper 70’s lower 80’s
Humidity-Very little if any
Heating and Equipment:
Heating-heating should be provided by either incandescent bulbs of high wattage(100w-preferably120w),or by a Ceramic heating elements. You could also use a heating under tank pad for the nights. Be sure to have two thermometers on the cool side and hot side make sure it stays at a reasonable temp. NEVER use a heat rock it could cause severe burns on belly or worse.
Caging Provided:
A minimum of 20 gallons for one Mali Uromastyx, 1 male, and 2 females should be 60 gallons. Just remember the bigger there cage is the happier they are.
Diet:
Herbivorous
Description of Diet:
Mali Uromastyx are mainly herbivorous
Most of your reptiles diet should consist of manly alfalfa, collard greens, turnip greens and other leafy kinds vegetables.
It has been known to eat bird seeds, any kind of vegetables, and for a snack some fruit
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
I spray the reptiles food with calcium, and vitamins two to three times a week because if you spray every time it would become toxic to them.
Maintenance:
Mali Uromastyx like to toss there food around and tear into little pieces all over the enclosure so every now and the do a spot check through its cage pick up food that is scattered all over the bottom of the cage pick its feces up and give it a 110 120 degree F. bath in no deeper than an inch or so and you will be good to go
Some Words on this Species:
This is an excellent reptile to have when I first got mine it was hitting me with its tail biting me and everything, but all you got to do is give it time, I got that one no more than six months and it is already eating out of my hand he has never even thought about biting me know. So it is a good beginners reptile and even an advanced reptile hobbyists
