Main Category:

Sub Category:

Salamanders, Newts

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Salamander King

Years Experience:

15 to 20 Years

Species:

Tiger Salamander

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum)

Sexing and Characteristics:

Females are generally larger than males in width. Males have enlarged cloaca (cavity in which reproductive canals open).

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Ideal substrate would be soil and NOT gravel or sand. This is essential towards the well being of a Salamander. All Salamanders MUST have a swimming area, preferably filtered. Terrarium water/soil ratio should be about 60% water, 40% soil.

Lighting and UVB:

Because Salamanders and most amphibians do not bask, special lighting is not required. Tiger Salamanders will spend most of their day buried or soaking.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Temperature can be kept at above 55 degrees and below 85 degrees. Drastic temperature changes can be harmful. A swimming area in the environment will take care of humidity needs, as long as soil maintains moist.

Heating and Equipment:

None REQUIRED.

Caging Provided:

In terrarium habitats, no more than one adult Salamander per 6 gallons.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Salamanders are generally obese creatures. They’ll eat anything that moves in front of them. Diet mainly includes insects (appropriately sized) as frequently as desired. They have very a slow metabolism and adjust to feeding intervals well. Salamanders kept in pond set-ups will often eat small fish. NOTE: goldfish are not a healthy meal for any amphibian. Also, buying Salamander and Newt pellets is a waste of money, you’ll end up paying more for your pet food than your car payment.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

None REQUIRED.

Maintenance:

Replace soil when visibly needed. Water level must remain fairly high because Salamanders aren’t good climbers; they will have trouble climbing out of water to land in a shallow pool.

Some Words on this Species:

Very low maintenance creatures; Tiger Salamanders are always smiling.
