Swifts

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Emerald swift

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Emerald Swifts

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males have a blue belly and a bright green color. Females are more brown and have a cream colored chest. Females can also have a bit of orange under their chin.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

Substrates can be Paper towels but if you want a better look to your tank you can have sand, moss, tree bark, or repti carpet. The best substrates are ones that swifts can burrow in. Their needs to be a higher humidity for this lizard than most other lizards. The humidity should be around 65% to 70%. Spry your tank 1-2 times a day. I personally also have a Exo terra waterfall in mine to help provide humidity. A water bowl should be included if you don’t have a water fall though.

Lighting and UVB:

YOU NEED UVB LIGHTING IN YOUR TANK!!!!!! It gives your swift calcium and other nutrients you can only get from the sun. You can’t put your tank near the sun in any way or else it will heat up and kill your swift.

Temperatures and Humidity:

The temp. on the hot side where your lamp is and where the swift will bask should be 90-95. The warm side(the middle of the tank duh) should be 87-90. The cooler side(hopefully u realized is the other side of the tank) should be 80-83.Night temperatures should be lowered to 75-80. Humidity needs to be high. It should be 65% or better. A thermometer and hygrometer should be bought to check your temperatures. It also might be a good idea to have a thermometer one each side of the tank to check your temp. better.

Heating and Equipment:

Hiding places are needed on both sides of the tank and climbing branches are really good. Plants are fine to put in for hides but make sure they are not toxic. I have a real cactus in my tank but if you put one in your tank make sure it does not have too big of needles.

Caging Provided:

A 20 gallon will be OK for one or a maximum of 2. The bigger the better though. The like to climb so the height of the tank should be used too.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

I have never seen a swift eat any fruits/or veges. I think they are strictly carnivores. You may feed them crickets, mealworms, supperworms, waxworms. Kingworms and pinkies are OK every so often but should only be fed as a treat.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Always dust your insects. I keep a small bowl of vitamin dust in my swift’s tank which he sometimes nibbles at.

Maintenance:

Their tank’s substrate should be removed and replaced 5-6 times a year depending on their substrate. A thorough cleaning of the walls is also necessary although I admit that I do that only twice a year.

Some Words on this Species:

Emerald swifts are very good climbers and can easily escape a cage. Always have a good screen top on because I have seen emerald swifts jump onto the screen top and walk upside down.
