Sub Category:

Basilisks

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Lil croc

Years Experience:

Under 1 Year

Species:

Brown basilisk

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

water dragon and sailfin lizard

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males have large crest from head to tail and females lack the crest males have. males are larger than the females.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

I use potting soil becuase it keeps control of the humidity, and its attractive and keeps the crickets and other food items from hiding(except worms). It also is good for live plants.

Lighting and UVB:

They must have their UVB requirements to eat, breed and show off those behaviors. If not they may get diseases such as MBD(metabolic bone disease which is very FATAL).

Temperatures and Humidity:

Always keep their temperatures in the md 80’s and 90’s.(younger basiliks should be around 75-80 degrees during the day. If they dont get their heat they may get paralyzed and die.The humidity should be around 80%.(do that by misting the cage twice a day).

Heating and Equipment:

Never use heat rocks becuase they burn or may shock your reptiles. use basking bulbs such as the zoo med brand, they also give the UVA requirments your reptile needs.

Caging Provided:

55 gal. and larger can be good. The taller the better because they are arboreal(climbers) and water lovers. Make sure there is always branches and a bowl for them to swim and hang out inside.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

I feed my basilisk crickets(adults that are gutloaded), meal worms, pinkie to fuzzie mice. sometimes they eat plants and fruits, I feed mine hibiscus leaves.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I put the crushed vitamins on crickets and mice.

Maintenance:

They poop in their water which makes it easier to clean. but make sure you change the water if they ever poop in the water.

Some Words on this Species:

These are the no touch lizards becuase they are very aggresive espesialy the females. These lizards can be housed together becuase they dont try to attack one another becuse they have the same requirments and attain the same size. maybe they may be capable of even breeding.
