Sub Category:

Salamanders, Newts

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Newt baby

Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Red Eft

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Some other terriestal juviniles.

Sexing and Characteristics:

You can only tell female and male apart when they are aquatic adults. A male’s cloaca will swell and become larger.

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

I recommend eco earth, for water you need a large dish with sand and rock’s in bottom. I ONLY use well water which is normally from your hose.

Lighting and UVB:

No lighting is required although a day night cycle may be healthier.

Temperatures and Humidity:

In my experience temperature ranges from 75 to 85 and rarely 90. I recommend a day night cycle.

Heating and Equipment:

No heating is required.

Caging Provided:

I use a ten gall for up to 2-5 eastern newts and don’t leave them alone. I also recommend all eastern newts be roughly the same size. I put large plant’s and sticks in the tank for climbing and a couple large rocks. I also have moss blotched in different parts.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

I feed night crawler’s cut in half twice a week. I feed trout worms, and about twice a month newborn crickets. In fall I offer a tiny pinch of raw beef because it fattens them up nicely, but don’t feed to much.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I put calcium on crickets.

Maintenance:

I change tank about once a week. I use animal safe soap. I soak the eco earth in water and squeeze the water out until it’s damp. I do this outside with my hose. I get new plant’s and change the moss.

Some Words on this Species:

I think this species is fun because it’s a type you can handle and fairly easy and cheap to care for.
