Main Category:

Sub Category:

Venomous Snakes

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

SnakeKeeper93

Years Experience:

Under 1 Year

Species:

Agkistrodon Piscivorus ssp. (Cottonmouths)

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

All cottonmouths.

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males normally get bigger then females. They average 31"-36" for females and 36"+ for males.

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

I use mulch or aspen bedding, but it is be dangerous to try and find a venomous snake under loose bedding like that. As long as you are being safe and not stupid, I would use that type of bedding. Use a large water dish so that they can soak in it when they want.

Lighting and UVB:

UVB lights would be great, although not absolutely needed. In the wild they bask a lot and I try and make the most natural set-up I can for my reptiles.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Upper 70s to low-mid 80s. A basking temp of about 88-90.

Heating and Equipment:

Use lights during the day and a heating pad at night.

Caging Provided:

I would use a 40 gallon breeder SIZED tank, but a fish tank is not made to hold venomous reptiles. Get a custom made cage, a neodesha, or make your own cage. About 3’ wide by 2’ deep and 18" tall.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Feed an appropriately sized rodent every 7-14 days.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Maintenance:

The care of a cottonmouth is a lot like a copperhead. Just be careful.

Some Words on this Species:

It is a very beautiful species, and even though it isn’t the most venomous snake on the planet, treat it like it is. When you get to confident is when they’ll get you.
