 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Red Spotted Newt

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Eastern newt

Sexing and Characteristics:

As adults these newts will have quite noticeable bulges.
Mainly nocturnal but often seen foraging in day light.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Substrate should be eco earth, or repti bark. I suggest repti bark it wont dry out as fast.
A water dish will be needed, not a large one. In the aquatic stage you will need either a tank full of water or and aqua-terrarium.

Lighting and UVB:

No lighting is needed, but I still uses a UVB.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Temperature should be around 70-75 degrees.
Humidity around 50% to 60%
Spritz the cage 1-2 times a day.

Heating and Equipment:

No heating is needed. And you will need a feeding container( if fed outside of cage) anole food by zoo med, and a spray bottle.

Caging Provided:

I use a ten gallon for my six since up to seven can be housed in a single ten gallon, five gallons should hold only 3-4. I used repti-bark as substrate and a water dish, a moist hid, a large stick for natural look, and a cave type thing for fish tanks.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Anole food by zoo med (dried flies), earthworms, frogs eggs and tadpoles, guppies and other small fish, snails slugs, and craw fish.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Calcium powder 2 times a week

Maintenance:

Clean the cage once a month since these animals are fairly clean. Sprince the cage one to two times a day. And feed 4 times a week.

Some Words on this Species:

They are very easy animals to take care of I recommend them to anyone.
