Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
none
Sexing and Characteristics:
The only way I know how to sex a Mali is to look for the hemipenal bulges on the under side of the tail. There is another way but it can be unpredictable. The male can have a greenish to yellowish looking back and black every where else, but the female can on some occasions the female can look like this, also. On the other side a female can have a brownish look but the male can also.
Mostly Active During:
Day
Substrate and Water Needs:
The substrate is easy. For the babies you can use paper towels and for the adult I use washed play sand, a thick layer of sand will be needed for your Mali because they like to bury. Mali Uromastyx DON’T need water. Don’t mist or keep a water dish in the cage. Mali Uros get the water they need from their food. You can give your Mali a soak from time to time.
Lighting and UVB:
Malis will need 2 heat lamps and a 10.0 uvb light.
Temperatures and Humidity:
Malis like it HOT. So for the basking spot 120-130 degrees for the cool end a temperature of 80-90 degrees is fine. Humidity is BAD, if there is to much humidity your Mali can get a respiratory illness and die.
Heating and Equipment:
Two 100 watt heat bulbs is going to be needed sometimes more, so you can get you cage hot enough. one or two 10.0 uvb bulbs are also going to be needed.
Caging Provided:
I provide my baby Mali with a 40 gallon but as your Mali grows so does the cage, A 50-60 gallon will be needed as an adult. Malis need a hide on the hot end and on the cool end. Mine loves his four hides.
Diet:
Omnivorous
Description of Diet:
Uromastyx are omnivorous lizards though a majority of their diet consists of vegetables and dark leafy greens with the occasional insects. Vegetables such as carrots, beans, peas, corn, and many varieties of dark greens a and dandelion greens should be offered. Some bird seed can also be added to the vegetable mix as well. Crickets, mealworms, super worms or wax worms can be offered once a month. Mine loves the chase.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
You should supplement your Mali’s food 3-4 times a week.
Maintenance:
The enclosure should be spot cleaned daily. .
Some Words on this Species:
