 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Years Experience:

1 to 2 Years

Species:

Major Plated Lizard

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Plated Lizard

Sexing and Characteristics:

Sexing plated lizards is fairly easy. Males have large pores on their back legs which look kind of waxy. Females also have these pores but are far smaller.

Mostly Active During:

Day

Substrate and Water Needs:

I use a 70% sand and 30% bark (around 3 inch deep) mixture as Plateds like to burrow. Fresh water should be offered daily.I use a baking tin deep enough for them to bath/soak in which they use on a daily basis.

Lighting and UVB:

Basking spot light and UVB is a must. You can buy an Exo Terra Solar Glow which provides UV rays and also provides infra red rays for basking.

Temperatures and Humidity:

Ambient temps of around 80f and basking spot of around 90/95f. Never letting the temps drop past 70 on a night. Humidity isn’t needed although having SOME humidity does help them shed.

Heating and Equipment:

Heat mat isn’t really needed unless you’re house goes lower than 70f on a night. I use 1 light fixture which is an Exo Terra Solar Glow. You can use a combination of a 5.0 UVB light and a Basking spot light.

Caging Provided:

For my pair of plateds I use a 5x2x2 enclosure. For a single Plated a 4x2x2 is what I would suggest using.

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

Plateds eat both Animal and Plant. Insects such as Crickets, Mealworms, morio worms should be offered every other day and fresh fruits should be offered daily, such as strawberries, raspberries, banana

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Supplementing is a must!! I dust every feed with a calcium supp’ and once a week a vitamin supp’

Maintenance:

Take out all their "waste" on a daily basis. Also fresh water should be offered DAILY

Some Words on this Species:

Treating these lizards with the respect they deserve will result in a great pet. Mine often sit with me while I’m on the computer watching telly and even doing the house work.
