Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:
N/A
Sexing and Characteristics:
N/A
Mostly Active During:
Day
Substrate and Water Needs:
This lizard requires sand and a lot of i as they like to "swim" through the sand so it should be a at least 3" or 4" deep. As they are desert animals usually found in places around Egypt, they don’t require a lot of water but A very shallow water dish not more than 1 inch deep should be provided. If the water dish is made too deep the sand fish lizard could drown and they have even been know to drown in 1 inch of water so you need to be careful
Lighting and UVB:
N/A
Temperatures and Humidity:
A basking area temperature around 95-100 degrees Fahrenheit is required with the rest of the enclosure being around 80-90 degrees. Th night time temperature should be a bout 75-80 degrees
Heating and Equipment:
A spot light bulb should be installed and be used as the main heat source for the basking spot, there should also be a 24 hour heat mat underneath the sand
Caging Provided:
A cage measuring 24"x12"x15" is an adequate size but the bigger the better
Diet:
Carnivorous
Description of Diet:
These animals will eat most things that you will find in your local pet store eg. locusts, crickets, meal worms, silkworms. I also put wax worms underneath the sand and then the sand fish will dig and try and find them. I feel that this is good as this is what the would do in the wild, and it is always best to try and mimic their natural surroundings as much as possible. Wax worms however are very high and fat and low in other essential nutrients and minerals which the sand fish lizard requires so they should be fed to your lizard sparingly
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
The food should be dusted once a week or adults and every other day for hatchlings and juveniles
Maintenance:
The enclosure should be spot cleaned every day and the sand should be replaced every couple of months. If possible the bottom layer of sand should be kept moist, this can be done with a tube put underneath the sand.
Some Words on this Species:
This species is quite a small lizard and they live to be about 20 years of age. They are very docile and shy and they don’t really like to be handled but they are an amazing lizard to watch ,i highly recommend them if you want a lizard to look at rather than hold all the time
