Sexing and Characteristics:
In colubrid family.
Average adult size is between 10 to 18 inches
Coloration can range from gray to red
Small scale at end of tail looks like a spike, supposedly for bracing itself when eating.
Not a captive bred specie yet.
Mostly Active During:
Day
Substrate and Water Needs:
Likes a deep, semi-moist substrate, potting soil that doesn’t have vermiculite works well. Have large, shallow water dish at all times.
Lighting and UVB:
A uvb light should be on at least 6 hours a day, to help with digestion.
Temperatures and Humidity:
Keep a thermal gradient, 70 F on the cool side and 85 f on the warm. Keep mildly humid... topsoil should be slightly dewy to the touch.
Heating and Equipment:
An undertank heater can be used, as well as a heat light.
Caging Provided:
A ten gallon tank with a locking lid will suffice for the young, but move to a 29-40 gallon for more than one, or a single adult.
Diet:
Carnivorous
Description of Diet:
Eats slugs.
Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:
V D3 powder can be used, but "gutloaded" slugs are a best bet.
Maintenance:
Parasites are common, usually mites and ticks. There are sprays available for these issues. Clean tank as needed, replace water daily.
Some Words on this Species:
Only wild caught animals are available at this time, notoriously hard to maintain because of specialized diet. If you have regular access to garden slugs and can keep them over winter, this might be a good pet for the experienced.
