Green iguana

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

iguanas

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males-Male iguanas are often larger than females. They also have larger femoral pores on the back legs.Bulges on the base of the tail(near the vent) can be seen.

Females-Females iguanas are often smaller than male iguanas. There femoral pores are smaller. And females lack the bulges on the base of the tail(by the vent).

when young it is hard to tell if it is a male or a female but if a male watch out at breeding season (spring)

Mostly Active During:

N/A

Substrate and Water Needs:

I spray my iguana down with a water bottle each day and just make sure my iguanas water is full with fresh water at all times

Paper towels, butcher paper,newspaper(non-toxic ink),Reptile carpet,tiles,indoor/outdoor carpet.Make sure their are no loose threads on the carpets.Iguanas may eat it,or get wrapped around there toes.

Lighting and UVB:

I have both day and night lamps to keep my iguana happy vita lights work to which ever one you go with you can probably purchase them at any pet store near you

Temperatures and Humidity:

The pet store owner told my iguanas are desert animals i later learned that they are tropical if you buy a heat rock be careful cause it may burn the iguanas belly

Heating and Equipment:

All i use is a day time light bulb and a night one the day one for day and the night one for night

your iguana may look cute under a cheap blue light bulb from walmart but all he is doing is suffering

so Iguanas are tropical reptiles. They need a basking spot 90-95 degrees

Caging Provided:

Reptile shavings will work but not for long your iguana will grow out a cage and you will have to make a bigger one then you can use old news paper or you can let him roam be careful for other pets

Diet:

Omnivorous

Description of Diet:

I give mine 2 crickets each day but other wise his main meal is lettuce fruit carrots etc. treats are all ways good once in a while

Also if you are unable to get greens(say if a hurricane hit) you could keep a thing of "Rep-cal iguana food" soak it in water or fruit juice.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

HerpCare Calcium Supplement is a great to put on a iguanas food 3 times a week

Maintenance:

On a rating scale 1-10 a iguana would be a 10 many people would not recommend iguanas to be a children first reptile pet i disagree iguana was my first. but i still think first the child should show responsibility

Some Words on this Species:

I will always have a iguana in my life.Love em’. iguanas are great if you decide to get one make sure you take good care of it. oh ya if your iguanas tail breaks off its normal but still take it to a vet
