Sub Category:

Salamanders, Newts

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Mampam

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Tiger salamander

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

probably other mole salamanders

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males grow bigger, their vent swells up during the breeding season and they have longer tails.
Females are fatter.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

Since they like to burrow, I use substrate bought from the pet store, ECO earth. It’s perfect. Though potting soil, without vermiculite can be used. For water, I use a dog bowl since it can’t be knocked over, and i dechlorinate the water.

Lighting and UVB:

None

Temperatures and Humidity:

Temperatures from 65 to 75, is best. Though tigers can tolerate higher temps than some other salamanders, for short periods, mine survived 90 degrees for a day when i first got it, when i was out of town.

Heating and Equipment:

None

Caging Provided:

My first one was in a 10gal, then a 15gal, then when i got my second tiger, i put them both in a 20gal, which is good for two large tigers.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

I feed canned crickets, mealworms, and any insect large i can find outside, make sure the area you find the insects is free of harmful chemicals.
My first tiger wont eat earth or garden worms, i don’t think i’ve tried offering them to my second one.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

They hate calcium! all my pets do. So i can’t put it on its food, without it ignoring it.

Maintenance:

Change the soil every 1-2 months, (when soil starts to dry). in a ten gallon. I think i waited four months before my 20gal tiger tank needed visible changing.
spray the tank once or twice a day, ( I do it twice)
Try to change the water everyday.

Some Words on this Species:

Interesting, easy to keep, and low maintenance. May spend extended periods of time under soil,(weeks). After a while they tend to lose most of their shyness. They will, beg for food when hungry. My first salamander used to always jump when my hand, was over the tank, but doesn’t beg as seriously as it used to anymore, so i guess he knows generally when i will feed him, and my second tiger, just never really started begging, it does look at me in the hope of food, but it has never pawed on the glass. I just love them!
