Sexing and Characteristics:
Females are larger about 30-36 inches.
Males are about 15-30 inches.

Substrate and Water Needs:
Orchid Bark or Repti-Carpet work the best, aspen will work too. If using aspen make sure the fish don’t go in it or if the snake swallows any during feeding.
Lighting and UVB:
A standard reptile UVB 5.0 or a regular house light.
Temperatures and Humidity:
Between 70 and 80, the basking spot should be no more then 85.For humidity don’t worry about misting just provide a large water bowl because if the cage is too damp the snake will get sores or blisters.
Heating and Equipment:
Between 70 and 80, and basking no more then 85.
Caging Provided:
10 gallon will hold up to two babies till around 2 feet.
When adults i keep them in a 40 gallon tank with half orchid bark, half water so it is semi-aquatic.

They will eat minnows, baby catfish, frogs, tadpoles, and toads(only some).

Very calm, mellow species of water snake. Will eventually eat from the hand, excellent beginner snake. My female is 8yrs old, but there is no record on how long this species of water snake live but most Nerodia live 8-14 yrs.
