 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Mandalorian1990

Years Experience:

Under 1 Year

Species:

Chinese Fire Bellied Newt

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Japanese fire bellied newt

Sexing and Characteristics:

Males have a more enlarged cloaca. The the base of the tail won’t be streamlined with the rest of the tail. There will appear to be a bump.

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

Gravel(nothing small enough to be swallowed) and filtered water with water purifier used for fish tanks. I personally use AmQuel.

Lighting and UVB:

None necessary

Temperatures and Humidity:

The colder the better. Can tolerate temps as high as 76 degrees Fahrenheit and as low as 66 degrees Fahrenheit.I would recommend keeping the humidity high because when the newt is on land it is not smart enough to get back in the water when its skin gets dry.

Heating and Equipment:

None.If it gets too hot, simply change about half the water for colder water. Make sure to take the newt out because the rapid temperature change could stress it out.

Caging Provided:

For one newt, a large Kritter Keeper should be sufficient. For 2+ use a ten gallon aquarium or glass tank

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Newt pellets, Pinhead crickets, bloodworms, whit worms, earthworms(chopped into bite sized pieces), small mealworms, flightless fruit flies.Feed adults twice a week and feed younger newts every day to every two days. You should feed it in a different container so you don’t make the water i it’s habitat dirty.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

A calcium supplement is needed if you feed it insects often. I feed mine pellets and he doesn’t seem to need calcium.

Maintenance:

Clean once a week depending on the number of animals you have. For a ten gallon tank I would recommend getting a in tank filter which you can purchase at almost any pet store.

Some Words on this Species:

Fun to watch, Active, don’t expect to be able to handle very much because they dry out quickly and run surprisingly fast for their size, but otherwise a beautiful animal to have.
