 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Tokay_Dude

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Tokay Gecko (gecko gecko)

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

None that I know of

Sexing and Characteristics:

N/A

Mostly Active During:

N/A

Substrate and Water Needs:

About 1" deep Bed-A-Beast with some moss scattered over the cage and branches for substrate. For water I keep a water dish in the cage for humidity, but most tokays drink from the mist. Put some electrolize in the water misting bottle for proper hydration.

Lighting and UVB:

An infrared spot lamp found at most pet stores should. Ask a person there about wattage, it matters on which brand of bulb you use. No UVB required, they are nocturnal.

Temperatures and Humidity:

My cage is kept at about 87 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity between 60 and 85 percent.

Heating and Equipment:

Infrared spot lamp for heat. They hate daylight!

Caging Provided:

I have a 40 gallon tall for the two I had, but one adult can be kept safely in no less than a 20 high. 10 gallons is too small, these lizards sometimes get to be a little larger than a foot long.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Crickets, sometimes silk worms. An occasional pinky mouse can be entertaining.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

Cricket dust and calcium on the crickets. Electrolize in the misting and bowl water.

Maintenance:

Spot clean whenever is needed, change bedding every three months. Keep carcases out of the cage, it is an open invite to parasites.

Some Words on this Species:

This is an extremely hardy gecko. Should not be attempted by a beginner because their bite can and will pierce through skin. These giant geckos are great escape artists, so keep screen cover clips on the cage at all times.
