Sub Category:

Milk Snakes

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

BOAandPYTHON

Years Experience:

3 to 5 Years

Species:

Nelson Milk Snake

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

Only Nelson Milk Snake

Sexing and Characteristics:

Probing is the most accurate way to tell whether its a male or female. Do not attempt to probe unless you are very experienced because it could lead to damage to the snake.

Mostly Active During:

Both

Substrate and Water Needs:

Best to provide a loose substrate because they will burrow if given the chance. Avoid poisonous woods like pine and cedar. Newspaper is also good, easy to clean up. I use cypress mulch, its easy to clean up the snake can burrow and it doesn’t mold.

Lighting and UVB:

There is no proof snakes require uvb but other lighting can be used as long as a normal photo period is used (12hours day 12 hours night)

Temperatures and Humidity:

They do very well with a temp gradient of 78-90. You can have room humidity and it will be fine but bump it up to about 60-70% for shedding.

Heating and Equipment:

Under tank heaters work the best but be aware since they do burrow it can lead to burns. I place a piece of plexi glass on the area where my uth is sitting for added layers. But a thermostat is required if using a uth, it will help prevent burns.

Caging Provided:

I house my nelson milk snake in a Rubbermaid. it holds humidity and heat very well. It also is a lot cheaper then glass cages. Glass cages are not bad but Rubbermaid’s are a lot more sufficient.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

Feed a appropriately sized mouse/rat every 5-7 days.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

None needed

Maintenance:

Spot clean and clean the entire cage every 2-3 months, by this i mean hose down the cage with bleach and water and change the substrate completely.

Some Words on this Species:

This is a very rewarding species. they are secretive eaters so this could be a problem for some, not all are shy eaters. They have in my opinion the best colors of any milk snake other then the Honduran. they are also very popular in the pet trade. All in all great species for the beginner or the most experienced snake keeper.
