Sub Category:

Pythons

 Care Sheet Submitted By:

Tommy

Years Experience:

10 to 15 Years

Species:

African rock python Sebae S. and Sebae N.

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

All rock pythons including burmese pythons.

Sexing and Characteristics:

Females are normaly much larger than males. Males will have larger spurs than females and will have a longer tail that tapers off.

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

I like cypress mulch for this speices as it hold the humidity they need. Big snakes like this need a large water dish. I would use around a 40 to 50 gallon sweater box for them.

Lighting and UVB:

None

Temperatures and Humidity:

These guys need around 75 percent humidity. I keep temps around the 88-92’F on the hot end and around 82-85’F on the cool end. At night I let the temp drop to about 78’F. These snakes simpley wont eat if the temps arn’t high enough for them!!

Heating and Equipment:

I use heating pads and large heat strips as well as heat lamps. Never let day lights stay on all the time.

Caging Provided:

At bare minimum i would keep an adult in a cage that mesures 8’x4’x30’’. The cage must be kept secure or you may have a large snake lose.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

You must be prepared to feed these animals dead mice, rats, rabbits, chickens and small goats and pigs.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

None

Maintenance:

HIGH MAINTENANCE is needed if you want your friends to come over because if you dont keep you cages clean all the time your house will smell horrible. Also it is un sanitary.

Some Words on this Species:

People say this can be one of the meanest snakes around. My experience with them is just the opposite. I have been bitton 9 times and that was when he was young. These snakes get BIG, REAL BIG, BIG ENOUGHT TO KILL AN ADULT HUMAN!!!!! BE CAREFULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
