Ball pythons

Other Species or Phases this Care Sheet May Cover:

none

Sexing and Characteristics:

Mostly Active During:

Night

Substrate and Water Needs:

These snakes do not need a very fancy set up. I keep my snake in a 30 gallon tank with newspaper and a water dish. Some people say that you don’t need a water bowl but I sometimes see my snake in her bowl so just put 1 to be safe. With substrates you could use aspen shavings which are good because they stick to wastes. Reptile carpet is okay, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Lighting and UVB:

No special lighting is needed because this is a nocturnal species. Although if it gets to cold I would use a heat lamp. DO NOT USE A HOT ROCK THESE CAN BURN YOUR SNAKE.

Temperatures and Humidity:

The temperatures are not vary hard to reach. I live in Florida and my snake is outside so she gets the natural lighting and heat. Don’t let it get above the mid 90’s or below 65. Humidity should be at least 80%. To raise humidity put more water in the snakes dish or spray the tank every morning.

Heating and Equipment:

No heating is really needed. You should use a heat pad or lamp if it gets to cold. Also add a hide box, for my snakes they get by fine but you should have 1.

Caging Provided:

My female is in a 30 gallon fish tank outside on the back porch. She has newspaper floors and a large water bowl. she often hides under the newspaper so she needs no hide box.

Diet:

Carnivorous

Description of Diet:

For young snakes use pinkys and fuzzies. You should get your snake used to eating rat because if you have a big snake it needs a big meal and rats are overall bigger than mice. For the young feed every 4 to7 days. Subadults every week and for adults every 2 weeks if the snake is healthy.

Supplements, Nutrition and Usage:

I do not use any supplements and my snake is healthy and living fine.

Maintenance:

Overall these are great pets. No matter what age, this is a great snake for beginner or experienced hobbyist. These snakes can tolerate being held for long periods of time and will rest on you shoulder or table if your using the computer or watching tv.

Some Words on this Species:

Ball pythons are known for refusing to eat for several months. If this happens to your snake for a long period of time take it to a vet and make sure cage conditions are right. But be alarmed if your snake refuses to eat for a week or 2 this happens alot. Its when it constantly refuses to eat that you need to take action. Remember this animals life is in your hands.
